Credit Card Safety Tips

Shopping online is quick and easy. While it is safe to shop online, MSU professors Bob LaRose and Nora Rifon, who study consumer privacy and online safety for e-commerce and social effects of the Internet, offer insightful advice for making purchases. Here are a few of their tips:

  • Check for a secure connection for each transaction. Before entering credit card information, make sure the Web page is secure. Two indicators are an “s” in the URL address –“https” – and a lock icon that appears in the lower right of the browser, do not use the website if either of these is missing.
  • To avoid the risk of any bad online shopping experience look for reputable sites. Begin with store front sites like www.amazon.com or look for the logos ISIS (Internet Shopping is Safe) and/or IDIS (Internet Delivery is Safe) which indicate that the retailer is part of the industry trust scheme.
  • After a sale, customers often receive e-mails that appear to be from the purchase site. But these could be part of a phishing scam to obtain credit card information or Social Security Numbers. Verify the URL in the message before clicking on it, or call the 800 # from the original site to verify the legitimacy of such messages.
  • Beware of “shoulder surfers” while using a computer in public areas.
  • Use strong passwords with a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Always change pre-assigned temporary passwords.
  • Never use the “save ID and password” option in your browser at home, or on a laptop or public computer.
  • Do not e-mail personal or financial information to a non-secure site.
  • Review your bank statements closely. Make sure there are no transactions you can’t account for. If you find a problem, contact the financial institution immediately.

Go Green with University Stores

Have you thought about the ways you can go green today? One simple change you can make is to switch over to recycled paper. Think about the amount of paper used in your office daily, and imagine how many resources and how much energy you could be saving if you made the change. Non-recycled paper creates more toxic bi-products and requires more trees and energy for production than recycled paper. With the technology available today, recycled paper prints as well as virgin paper, and with the comparable pricing, the benefits are endless.

Choose University Stores as your Go Green headquarters. Along with many other recycled products, US now offers three varieties of recycled white copy paper:

14053860 -   30% Post Consumer Content

14054080 - 100% Post Consumer Content

14054120 - 100% Post Consumer Content

If you are currently using the 30% recycled content paper, why not take it a step further and give the 100% recycled content a try? Go Green today!
